Janome Sewist 780DC: everyday sewing with an automatic thread cutter

Sew garments, repairs and decorative details with 80 built-in stitches and three one-step buttonholes. Twenty stitches have direct selection buttons. Slide-out charts show the other sixty, so you can find your pattern and return to your sewing quickly.

The backlit LCD shows your stitch, recommended foot and default width and length. Adjust the settings for your project, then use the speed slider to sew at a comfortable pace. The automatic cutter trims the upper and bobbin threads together at the press of a button. Seven sewing feet and a hard cover are included.

Choose stitches for garments and home projects

Use utility stitches for seams and repairs, stretch stitches for suitable fabrics and decorative patterns for finishing touches. Stitch width adjusts up to 7 mm and length up to 5 mm. Adjustable needle position helps you place straight stitching where you need it.

The automatic buttonhole foot sizes the buttonhole to your button. Selected satin stitches can be elongated up to five times while keeping their stitch density.

Control the start, finish and sewing speed

Sew with the supplied foot control or the start/stop button. The machine reaches up to 820 stitches per minute. Needle up/down helps you stop with the needle in the fabric for a turn. Reverse and auto-lock controls help secure seam endings.

Press the scissors button to cut both threads at the end of a seam. You can also select automatic cutting after locking stitches. This cutter setting is separate from stitch-pattern memory. A manual side cutter is available for threads that are unsuitable for the automatic cutter.

Prepare the machine with less fuss

The built-in needle threader helps you thread the needle. The top-loading Easy Set bobbin has a thread guide and cutter, so you do not need to draw up the bobbin thread before starting. Use the extra spool pin to wind a bobbin without unthreading the needle.

Six levels of presser-foot pressure let you adjust the pressure for your fabric. The seven-piece feed dog helps move the fabric through the machine. Snap-on feet make it easy to change between sewing tasks. Twin-needle sewing is supported with a suitable optional twin needle.

Make room for sleeves and quilting

Remove the accessory box to expose the free arm for sleeves and other small openings. The workspace measures 170 × 110 mm. Needle-plate seam and angle guides help with accurate seam placement.

Lower the feed dogs for free-motion work with a suitable optional foot. A wide table is available separately for larger projects. LED lighting, a rigid die-cast aluminium frame and a folding carry handle complete the setup. The opening face plate gives access to the upper thread path for threading checks and cleaning, as described in the manual.

Questions about the Sewist 780DC

Is the 780DC a useful machine for a beginner?

The direct stitch buttons, screen guidance and speed slider make everyday settings easy to find. It also offers adjustable pressure and decorative stitches as your projects develop. Our friendly team can help you choose a machine for the sewing you want to do.

What is the difference between the 740DC and 780DC?

The 740DC has 40 stitches and a manual side cutter. The 780DC has 80 stitches and an automatic thread cutter. Both models have three one-step buttonholes, a backlit LCD, adjustable foot pressure and a hard cover.

What does the automatic thread cutter do?

It cuts the upper and bobbin threads together. Press the scissors button after a seam, or use the cutter-memory setting to cut after locking stitches. You can start the next seam without drawing up the bobbin thread. Follow the manual for thread types and cutter operation.

Can I sew without using the foot pedal?

Yes. Use the start/stop button with the foot control disconnected. Set your pace with the speed slider and follow the instruction book when switching between these controls.

Can it quilt or sew free-motion designs?

Yes. It has drop feed, adjustable foot pressure and needle up/down. A suitable free-motion foot, walking foot, quarter-inch foot and wide table are optional accessories. Choose the equipment that suits your quilting method.

Does it make buttonholes automatically?

Yes. Choose one of three one-step styles and place your button in the automatic buttonhole foot. Lower the buttonhole lever and test the result on the same fabric and stabiliser before sewing your garment.

Does it have embroidery lettering or stitch memory?

It has decorative sewing stitches but no sewing alphabet or built-in pattern memory. It is a sewing machine for fabric you guide by hand. Hooped embroidery requires an embroidery machine.

Where can I find the manual and setup instructions?

The instruction book and instructional DVD are included. You can also read the Sewist 780DC manual and compare the 740DC and 780DC in Janome’s Australian brochure. For an uneven stitch or threading issue, check the threading, bobbin, needle and fabric settings first.
