Janome MC400E: make embroidery part of your next project
Add names to towels, decorate a jacket or stitch matching motifs for a quilt. The Memory Craft 400E gives you a 200 × 200 mm embroidery area, 160 built-in designs and six lettering fonts. Choose a design on the colour touchscreen, position it in the hoop and watch it take shape.
The MC400E is an embroidery-only machine. It works alongside your sewing machine, leaving everyday seams and garment construction to that machine.

Personalise gifts and everyday pieces
Start with the built-in motifs, borders and monograms. Six embroidery fonts and two- or three-letter monogram options let you add names and initials. Combine lettering with a motif to make the design your own.
Arrange your design on screen

Move, copy, rotate and mirror patterns on the colour touchscreen. Group elements, arrange lettering on an arc and use corner layouts for borders. Zoom in to check the arrangement before stitching.
Colour grouping reduces repeated colour changes when combining suitable patterns. Single-colour mode offers another way to use a design. Choose thread colours from the supported Janome, Robison-Anton, Madeira and Mettler palettes.
Work within a generous square hoop
The included SQ20b hoop provides a 200 × 200 mm stitch area. Use its template to align your fabric, then adjust the hoop position and trace the design outline before you start. The design must fit inside the selected hoop.
Choose the pace for your fabric
Adjust embroidery speed from 400 to 860 stitches per minute. The display shows progress and the estimated stitching time. Upper- and lower-thread sensors help you keep track of the thread supply.
Step through a design in units of 1, 10 or 100 stitches, or jump to a chosen stitch point. The thread-break return function helps you resume in the right place.
Simplify threading and trimming
The built-in needle threader, Easy Set top-loading bobbin and bobbin-winder cutter help with preparation. Automatic tension provides a starting setting, with adjustment available on screen.
The cutter trims the upper and bobbin threads together. Programmable jump-thread trimming helps reduce finishing between sections. Two LED lights illuminate the work area.
Bring additional designs to the machine
Load compatible embroidery files using a USB memory stick up to 16 GB. Save arrangements in the machine memory or on USB so you can use them again.
On-screen editing arranges existing stitch files. Turning a photograph or logo into embroidery requires suitable digitising software or a digitising service.

Frequently asked questions
Is the extension table included?
No. The extra-wide extension table is an optional accessory, sold separately. The SQ20b embroidery hoop and template are included.
Can the MC400E sew seams as well as embroider?
It stitches embroidery designs in a hoop. Use your regular sewing machine for seams, buttonholes and garment construction.
What is the largest embroidery size?
The maximum stitch area is 200 × 200 mm. The included SQ20b hoop supports that area. Check the complete design size, including any lettering you add, before stitching.
Do I need a computer to get started?
No. You can select, arrange and stitch the built-in designs directly on the machine. Use a computer when preparing downloaded designs or creating files with separate software.
Can I embroider my own logo?
Yes, once the logo has been converted into a suitable embroidery stitch file. A picture file alone is not ready to stitch. A digitising service can prepare it for your fabric, size and hoop.
What do I need for my first stitch-out?
Prepare embroidery thread, bobbin thread, a suitable needle, fabric and stabiliser. Match the stabiliser to the fabric and design. Make a sample on matching material before embroidering your finished item.
Does it change thread colours automatically?
The MC400E uses one needle. It stops between colour sections so you can thread the next colour. Colour grouping can reduce repeated changes in suitable combined designs.
How can I avoid puckering?
Use stabiliser suited to your fabric and design density. Hoop the fabric securely without stretching it. Check the thread and tension on a sample, and follow the instruction book for the bobbin-holder setup.
Where can I find setup information?
The package includes an instruction book and instructional DVD. The Australian MC400E brochure also gives a useful overview of the machine.
