Janome MyLock 544D: trim, sew and finish fabric edges

The Janome MyLock 544D brings three- and four-thread overlocking to garment sewing and everyday projects. It trims the fabric edge and encloses it with stitching in one pass. Use four threads for seams or three threads for lighter edge finishes, rolled hems and flatlocking.

Adjustable differential feed helps you control wavy knit edges and puckering on fine woven fabrics. Manual controls let you adjust the stitch length, cutting width, thread tension and presser-foot pressure for your fabric.

Choose your seam finish

Four-thread overlocking joins and finishes fabric edges. Three-thread overlocking tidies raw edges, while flatlocking adds a decorative seam finish. Gathering gives you another option for creative projects.

For a three-thread rolled hem, slide the needle-plate setting knob to the rolled-hem position and follow the manual’s stitch settings. The needle plate stays in place during the changeover.

Adjust the fabric feed

Differential feed changes the relative movement of the front and rear feed dogs. Adjust it to help a knit edge lie flat or reduce puckering on lightweight woven fabric. You can also use it for gathering.

Set stitch length from 1 to 4 mm and cutting width from 3.1 to 7.3 mm. Adjustable presser-foot pressure gives you another way to fine-tune feeding. Test the settings on an offcut of your project fabric.

Follow the threading guides

Colour-coded thread paths and the threading chart guide you through setup. The large and small screwdrivers and tweezers are included for threading and needle changes.

Lift the presser foot to open the tension discs before laying in the threads. Lower it before sewing so the discs engage again. Adjust the tension dials to suit your stitch and fabric. This model uses manual threading and HAx1SP ballpoint needles.

Work at your own pace

The foot control operates the machine at speeds up to 1,300 stitches per minute. Retract the upper knife when your technique calls for sewing without trimming the edge. The manual cutter on the face plate trims the thread chain after sewing.

The 8 kg machine has a carry handle. It arrives fully threaded. Make a test seam before starting your project so you can check the finish on your own fabric.

Four bonus feet and attachments

Explore more finishes with the four included extras. The blind stitch foot guides a folded hem. Use the gathering attachment for ruffles, the elastic gathering attachment for applying elastic, and the cording foot for decorative corded edges. Practise each technique on a sample before sewing your project.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Janome MyLock 544D suitable for a first overlocker?

Its colour-coded paths, threading chart and manual controls give you clear guidance while learning. Practise threading and adjusting the finish on scraps before starting a garment. Our friendly team can help you decide whether its features suit your sewing.

How do I thread the MyLock 544D?

Switch the machine off and follow the threading order and colour-coded diagram in the supplied instruction book. Lift the presser foot to release the tension discs for threading. Lower the foot, set the recommended tensions and test your seam before sewing your project.

Can it make a rolled hem?

Yes. It makes a three-thread rolled hem. Move the needle-plate setting knob to the rolled-hem position and use the needle and tension settings in the manual. You do not need to replace the needle plate.

What does differential feed do?

It adjusts how the front and rear feed dogs move fabric through the machine. This helps control stretched knit edges and puckered woven fabric. Test on the same fabric as your project and adjust until the edge lies as you want it.

Can it replace my sewing machine or make a coverstitch hem?

It works alongside a sewing machine by trimming and finishing edges. It does not make coverstitch hems, chain stitches or conventional sewing-machine buttonholes. Use a sewing machine for tasks such as zips and buttonholes.

Can I use two threads or sew without trimming?

The MyLock 544D uses three or four threads and has no two-thread converter. You can retract the upper knife to sew without trimming. Follow the manual’s setup instructions for that technique.

Where can I see the features and package details?

Read Janome’s MyLock 544D brochure. An instruction book is included. Janome also provides an online instructional video; a physical DVD is not supplied.
