Elna HD1000: practical sewing with a sturdy aluminium body
The Elna HD1000 is a mechanical sewing machine for everyday sewing, repairs and garment projects. Its painted aluminium body weighs 7.6 kg. Choose from 14 stitches, including a four-step buttonhole, using the stitch-selection dial and chart on the front.
A built-in needle threader helps with setup. Adjustable foot pressure gives you control over fabric feeding, while the free arm makes smaller garment openings easier to reach. Four sewing feet, tools and a hard cover are included.
Choose the stitch for your project
Use straight stitches for seams and zigzag for edge finishing or suitable stretch fabrics. The stitch chart keeps the available patterns in view. Set stitch length up to 4 mm, with a maximum stitch width of 5 mm.
The four-step buttonhole gives you control over each side and end. Use the supplied buttonhole foot and test the size on a scrap before sewing your garment. The reverse lever helps secure the beginning and end of seams.
Adjust fabric feeding
The push-and-release foot-pressure control adjusts how firmly the foot holds your fabric. The extra-high foot lift gives more clearance when positioning fabric under the foot.
Choose a needle and thread for the fabric, then test the stitch, tension and pressure on an offcut. Sew slowly over thicker joins. The HD1000 is a domestic machine; fabric thickness and seam construction still affect what it can sew.
Keep setup straightforward
The front-loading bobbin sits in a removable bobbin case. Wind thread using the bobbin winder, then follow the manual to load the case and bring up the bobbin thread. Two vertical spool pins hold your thread.
The built-in needle threader helps thread the needle. LED lighting illuminates the sewing area. Use the manual thread cutter after sewing and follow the marked metric or imperial seam guides on the needle plate.
Reach cuffs and support flat sewing
Remove the front accessory compartment to use the free arm for sleeves and trouser hems. Refit it for flatbed sewing and keep small tools in its storage space. Clip-on feet make changes between techniques straightforward.
The feed dogs can be lowered for techniques that need you to move the fabric by hand. Add a suitable optional foot for free-motion work. The folding handle and included hard cover help with carrying and storage.

Frequently asked questions
Is the HD1000 suitable for beginners?
Its mechanical dials and visible stitch chart make everyday settings easy to find. The needle threader helps with setup. Practise threading, buttonholes and tension adjustments on scraps before starting a project.
Can it sew denim and heavier fabrics?
It can handle suitable domestic sewing projects in denim and other heavier fabrics. Use the right needle and thread, test the layers and slow down at thick joins. Avoid forcing fabric through the machine.
Does it make an automatic one-step buttonhole?
No. It uses a four-step buttonhole. You select and sew each stage using the buttonhole foot. Test the buttonhole length and finish on matching fabric first.
How do I thread the HD1000?
Raise the presser foot and bring the take-up lever to its highest position. Follow the threading path in the instruction manual and use the built-in threader as directed. Load the front bobbin case correctly and bring the bobbin thread up before sewing.
Can I adjust the foot pressure?
Yes. Use the push-and-release control to adjust the pressure for your fabric. Follow the manual’s guidance and test an offcut to check feeding and stitch quality.
Can it do free-motion sewing?
Yes. Lower the feed dogs and use a suitable optional free-motion foot. You control the fabric movement by hand. Re-engage the feed dogs before returning to normal sewing.
Is a hard cover included?
Yes. The standard Australian package includes a hard cover, foot control, four sewing feet, a blind-hem guide and the accessories listed above.
