Janome FD216: straightforward sewing for everyday projects
Learn to sew, mend favourite clothes or make something new with the Janome FD216. Its mechanical controls put stitch selection, length and width at your fingertips. A drop-in bobbin and built-in needle threader help you prepare the machine.
Choose from 16 built-in stitches, including a four-step buttonhole. Four feet and the basic sewing accessories are supplied, with a foot control and instruction book to help you get started.

Choose and adjust your stitch
Use the stitch chart on the front of the machine and turn the selector dial to your chosen pattern. Stitch width adjusts up to 5 mm and length up to 4 mm. The reverse lever helps secure seam ends.
The FD216 includes stretch stitches and a stretch-stitch adjustment. This gives you more options for sewing knitted fabrics and decorative details. Match the needle and stitch to the fabric, then test on an offcut. Twin-needle sewing is also supported. Choose a suitable twin needle and follow the instruction book for threading and stitch settings.
Thread and check the bobbin
The top-loading bobbin sits under a clear cover, so you can check the remaining thread. The built-in threader helps guide thread through the needle eye. The metal auto-declutch bobbin winder handles bobbin preparation, and the manual cutter under the face plate trims thread ends.
LED lighting illuminates the needle area. Guide markings on the needle plate help you keep a consistent seam allowance.
Work around sleeves and smaller items
Remove the accessory compartment to expose the free arm for smaller circular areas. The compartment keeps your feet and tools together. The compact machine weighs approximately 5 kg and has a folding carry handle.
A rigid die-cast aluminium frame supports the machine, and the presser-foot holder is metal. Sew at speeds up to 830 stitches per minute, controlled with the supplied foot pedal.
Try different sewing techniques
The drop-feed lever lowers the feed dogs for techniques where you move the fabric yourself. Use a suitable optional darning foot for free-motion work. The extra-high foot lift helps when positioning fabric beneath the foot.
The supplied zipper foot helps you sew beside zip teeth. Use the blind-hem foot for discreet hems and the sliding buttonhole foot to sew the four stages of a buttonhole.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the FD206 and FD216?
The FD206 has six built-in stitches. The FD216 has 16 and adds stretch-stitch adjustment. Both have a top-loading bobbin, needle threader, four-step buttonhole and drop feed.
Is the FD216 suitable for learning to sew?
Its dial controls and small stitch selection make it a practical starting point for basic sewing, mending and alterations. The included instruction book explains setup and stitch use. Start with simple projects and practise settings on spare fabric.
How does the four-step buttonhole work?
Fit the sliding buttonhole foot and sew each of the four stages using the selector settings. Practise on a sample with the same fabric and interfacing before making the buttonhole on your garment.
Can I lower the feed dogs for free-motion sewing?
Yes. The machine has a drop-feed lever. Fit a suitable darning foot and follow the instruction book for the technique. A darning foot is an optional accessory.
Does it include the foot pedal and sewing feet?
Yes. The foot control and four feet are included: zigzag, sliding buttonhole, zipper and blind hem. Four bobbins, needles, spool holders and the other tools listed above are also supplied.
Can it sew denim or bulky seams?
Choose an appropriate needle and thread, then test your fabric layers. Sew bulky joins slowly and avoid pulling the fabric. If you regularly sew thick or demanding projects, ask our friendly team to help choose a machine for that workload.
Where can I see the stitch and feature comparison?
Read Janome’s FD206 and FD216 brochure. The instruction book supplied with your machine explains threading, sewing settings and care.
