Janome 1200D Professional: overlocking, cover hems and top cover
The 1200D combines overlocking, cover hemming and top-cover stitching in one machine. Finish garment seams, sew stretchy hems and add decorative cover stitching with its 20 preset stitches. It converts between two-, three-, four- and five-thread setups for different techniques.
The stitch-selection panel sets the starting thread tensions and shows the setup for your chosen stitch. Colour-coded thread paths and accessible loopers guide preparation. You receive the top-cover equipment, coverstitch sewing table, waste tray and care tools.
Snap-on feet help with changing techniques. The upper-looper separation system supports coverstitch conversion, while the presser-foot position sensor checks the foot position before sewing.
Finish seams and edges
Choose overlock stitches for seam construction and edge finishing. The retractable upper knife trims fabric during suitable overlocking. Rolled hems finish fine edges without changing the needle plate or standard foot.
Other choices include flatlock, blanket, stretch-wrap and double-chain stitches. Follow the stitch chart for the threads, needles and setup each technique needs.
Create cover hems and top-cover finishes
Coverstitch produces parallel needle lines with looper coverage underneath. Top-cover stitching adds coverage above the fabric as well. The supplied R foot, spreader device and round guide provide the top-cover setup.
Conversion requires changes to threading, needle positions and the machine setup. Fit the coverstitch sewing table and disengage the knife as directed. Follow the manual for the selected cover or top-cover stitch before sewing.
Select tensions and adjust for your fabric
The programme selector sets starting tensions for the selected stitch. The display also guides the remaining setup. Fine-tune for your actual fabric and thread rather than assuming one setting suits every project.
Differential feed adjusts from 0.5 to 2 to manage stretching or gathering. Stitch length adjusts from 0.5 to 5 mm, and cutting width from 3.5 to 7.5 mm. The pressure dial gives further control over fabric handling.
Prepare thread and work at your pace
Use the colour-coded paths and threading charts inside the covers. Accessible loopers, a tension-release device and the supplied handheld needle threader help with preparation. The machine uses manual threading.
The foot control sets your sewing pace, up to 1,300 stitches per minute. A cutter on the presser-foot lifter trims thread tails. The waste tray collects offcuts, and the handle helps when moving the machine.

What can the 1200D do?
It combines overlocking, chain stitching, cover hemming and top-cover stitching. Use the appropriate setup for seams, edge finishing, hems or decorative work. It complements your conventional sewing machine.
Does it switch instantly between overlocking and coverstitch?
No. Change the threading and machine setup for the stitch you need. Cover and top-cover work use the supplied sewing table, with the upper knife disengaged. The manual guides each conversion.
What is top-cover stitching?
It forms thread coverage on the top and underside of the fabric. The 1200D includes the R foot, spreader and round guide used for this technique. Set the needles and threading for your chosen top-cover stitch.
Is it an air-threading overlocker?
No. Follow its colour-coded paths and threading charts. The accessible loopers and supplied handheld needle threader help you thread the machine manually.
Does automatic tension mean there are no adjustments?
The selector provides starting tension settings for the chosen stitch. Test on matching fabric and thread, then adjust if needed. You also set differential feed, stitch length and other controls for the technique.
Can it make rolled hems?
Yes. Use the rolled-hem changeover device and the threading and settings in the manual. You do not need to replace the needle plate or standard foot simply to change to a rolled hem.
Which needles should I use?
ELx705 is the standard recommended system. The manual describes sizes 80/12 and 90/14 and special applications. Match the needle to the fabric and stitch, and follow the insertion instructions carefully.
How do I reduce wavy seams on stretch fabric?
Test differential feed, pressure and stitch settings on the same fabric layers first. Check threading and needle condition if stitches are uneven. Contact our friendly team if you need help with your fabric or setup.
Are the top-cover parts and waste tray included?
Yes. The standard package includes the top-cover R foot, spreader device, round guide, coverstitch sewing table and waste tray. Other specialty feet and attachments are separate accessories.
