Janome Memory Craft 9850: sewing, quilting and embroidery in one machine
The Janome MC9850 combines everyday sewing with hoop embroidery. Choose from 200 sewing stitches and six buttonhole styles, then switch to embroidery for designs and lettering. The removable embroidery unit slides onto the back of the machine, keeping both types of sewing in one workspace.
Your package includes eleven feet, the SQ14a embroidery hoop, a straight-stitch needle plate and a semi-hard cover. The colour touchscreen brings stitch settings, embroidery designs and editing tools together. Useful controls help you manage speed, needle position and thread cutting as you work.
Sew garments and decorative details
Stitch width adjusts up to 9 mm and length up to 5 mm. Choose from 91 needle positions for precise seam placement. The six buttonhole options and supplied garment-sewing feet support tasks such as zips, hems and button sewing.
Combine up to 100 stitches, mirror eligible patterns or elongate selected satin stitches up to five times. Two normal-sewing fonts, block and script, add lettering along a stitched line. Favourite-stitch settings and the startover function help you return to useful settings or restart a pattern.
Control fabric and sewing pace
The seven-piece feed dog and seven-level foot-pressure dial help you adjust for different fabrics. Automatic thread tension gives you a starting setting, and the speed slider limits your sewing pace. The machine sews at speeds up to 1,000 stitches per minute.
Use the foot control or start/stop button. Needle up/down, reverse and lock-off buttons help with turns and seam endings. The programmable cutter cuts the upper and bobbin threads together. A built-in needle threader, Easy Set bobbin and bobbin-winder cutter simplify preparation.
Embroider designs, names and monograms
The machine has 173 built-in embroidery designs and three embroidery fonts, including European characters and two- or three-letter monogram options. Use the supplied SQ14a hoop for a 140 × 140 mm embroidery area. The optional RE20a hoop increases the available area to 170 × 200 mm.
Transfer compatible JEF or JEF+ designs with a USB memory stick. Adjust embroidery speed up to 800 stitches per minute. Upper- and bobbin-thread sensors help you monitor the stitch-out, and the machine supports returning to the stitching position after a thread break.
Arrange your design on screen
Resize, combine, duplicate or flip designs. Position elements with drag-and-drop, use colour grouping and choose thread colours. Arc lettering, zoom and tracing help you arrange and check the design before sewing.
The machine can handle designs up to 200,000 stitches, with up to 3 MB of built-in memory. Stitch travel in steps of 1, 10 or 100 helps you locate a point in a design. Check the design against your selected hoop and test the fabric, stabiliser, needle and thread before embroidering a finished item.
Make room for your project
The sewing workspace measures 210 mm to the right of the needle by 120 mm high. Five white LED lights illuminate the work area. Remove the accessory compartment for free-arm sewing, or lower the feed dogs and use the supplied darning foot for free-motion techniques.
The needle plate changes with a quick-release system. A straight-stitch plate is included in your package; select a permitted stitch and needle position before sewing with it. The safety lock helps while threading or changing the needle or foot. The machine has a rigid die-cast aluminium frame, accessory storage and a carry handle.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use the MC9850 for regular sewing and quilting?
Yes. It has garment and decorative stitches, a quarter-inch foot for patchwork and a darning foot for free-motion work. Switch out of embroidery mode for regular sewing. The embroidery unit is removable, and you can also sew with it left attached.
Which hoop is included, and how large can I embroider?
The SQ14a hoop is included and provides a 140 × 140 mm embroidery area. To use the maximum 170 × 200 mm area, buy the optional RE20a hoop. Always check that your design fits the selected hoop.
Can I load designs from my computer?
Yes. Transfer compatible JEF or JEF+ embroidery files on a USB memory stick, following the manual’s folder and file instructions. The machine does not connect by Wi-Fi. Creating your own stitch files from artwork requires suitable optional digitising software.
What is the difference between sewing lettering and embroidery fonts?
The block and script sewing fonts form lettering along a stitched line while you guide the fabric. The three embroidery fonts are used in the embroidery mode, where the hoop moves the fabric. Choose the method that suits your project.
Are the cover, straight-stitch plate and knee lift included?
The semi-hard cover and straight-stitch plate are included. The knee lift and cloth guide are optional extras, as are the wide table and larger embroidery hoops.
What should I prepare before embroidering a garment?
Choose stabiliser, thread and a needle suited to the fabric and design. Hoop the project securely and check its position with the machine’s tracing function. Make a test stitch-out on matching fabric and layers before starting the finished garment.
