Janome Sewist 721: everyday sewing with stretch stitches and a needle threader
The Sewist 721 is a mechanical sewing machine for repairs, dressmaking and everyday projects. Choose from 19 built-in stitches, including stretch stitches and a four-step buttonhole, with the front selector dial. Separate length and width controls let you adjust the stitch for your fabric.
The top-loading bobbin is easy to access, and its clear cover lets you check the remaining thread. Adjustable foot pressure, a free arm and drop feed give you useful control as your projects develop. A hard cover is included for storage.

Choose a stitch and adjust your settings
The stitch chart is printed on the machine front. Select your stitch, then adjust width up to 5 mm and length up to 4 mm. Use the reverse lever to secure the ends of a seam.
Sew buttonholes in four stages with the selector dial and buttonhole foot. Practise on an offcut with the same fabric and stabiliser before sewing the finished garment.
Guide fabric at your own pace
The foot control adjusts sewing speed up to 830 stitches per minute. Foot pressure adjusts for the fabric you are sewing. The four-piece feed dog moves the fabric through the machine, while the extra-high foot lift helps you position thicker layers.
Choose suitable needles and thread, and sew bulky joins slowly. Check the result on matching fabric before starting your project.
Reach sleeves, hems and small openings
Remove the accessory compartment to use the free arm for sleeves and other tubular pieces. Lower the feed dogs for darning or free-motion sewing with a suitable optional foot.
Snap-on feet make it easy to change tasks. The front compartment keeps small accessories together, and the carry handle helps you move the machine between your sewing space and storage.
Keep preparation straightforward
The rotary-hook bobbin loads from the top. Wind a bobbin with the auto-declutch bobbin winder, then thread the machine as shown in the instruction book. The built-in needle threader helps you pass the thread through the needle eye. Use the stretch-stitch adjustment to fine-tune the balance of stretch patterns on your fabric.
LED lighting illuminates the needle area. Trim thread with the manual cutter beneath the face plate. The machine has a rigid die-cast aluminium internal frame and weighs 6.5 kg.

Questions about the Sewist 721
Is the Sewist 721 a good place to start sewing?
Its mechanical dials keep stitch selection, length and width easy to find. It provides practical stitches for repairs and simple projects, with adjustable foot pressure and a free arm. Our friendly team can help you choose a machine for the fabrics and projects you have in mind.
How do the four-step buttonholes work?
You sew the sides and ends in four stages, changing the selector setting between stages. Mark the required length and follow the buttonhole instructions in the manual. The machine does not automatically size the buttonhole from a button.
Does it have a built-in needle threader?
Yes. Follow the instruction book to position the needle and operate the threader. It helps guide thread through the needle eye after you have threaded the upper thread path.
What is the difference between the 709, 721 and 725S?
The 709 has a smaller utility-stitch selection and a four-step buttonhole. The 721 adds stretch-stitch options, a built-in needle threader and a hard cover. The 725S also offers a one-step buttonhole.
Can I sew without the foot pedal?
No. Use the supplied foot control to start, stop and adjust speed. This mechanical model has no start/stop button or electronic speed slider.
Can it sew free-motion or darning projects?
Yes. Lower the feed dogs and use a suitable optional darning or free-motion foot. You move the fabric by hand. Practise on matching layers to balance your sewing speed and hand movement.
Where can I find the manual and setup instructions?
The instruction manual is included. You can also read Janome’s Sewist 721 manual and compare the mechanical Sewist series in the Australian brochure. For stitching problems, check the needle, threading, bobbin placement and fabric settings first.
